چکیده

In this paper, we make a comprehensive determination of the Hubble constant H0 by using two parameters—the B − V color and the rate of decline ∆m15—to simultaneously standardize the luminosities of all nearby Cepheid-calibrated type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) and those of a larger, more distant sample of 29 SNe Ia. Each group is treated in as similar a manner as possible in order to avoid systematic effects. A simultaneous χ minimization yields a standardized absolute luminosity of the Cepheid-calibrated supernovae as well as the Hubble constant obtained from the more distant sample. We find H0 = 62 km s −1 Mpc−1 and a standardized absolute magnitude of -19.46. The sensitivity of H0 to a metallicity dependence of the Cepheid-determined distances is investigated. The total uncertainty δH0, dominated by uncertainties in the primary Cepheid distance indicator, is estimated to be 5 km s−1 Mpc−1. Subject headings: cosmology: distance scale–supernovae: general

A two-parameter luminosity correction for Type Ia supernovae

If, in addition to the usual luminosity correction described by the light curve slope parameter b, we introduce a color correction parameter R, then an extraordinarily good fit is realized for all the 29 distant Type Ia supernovae of the recent Calán/Tololo supernova survey. The reduced χ2 found is much lower than can be expected. All of the intrinsic dispersion is thereby removed from the data...

THE HUBBLE CONSTANT: A SUMMARY OF THE HST PROGRAM FOR THE LUMINOSITY CALIBRATION OF TYPE Ia SUPERNOVAE BY MEANS OF CEPHEIDS

This is the fifth and final summary paper of our 15 year program using the Hubble Space Telescope (HST) to determine the Hubble constant using Type Ia supernovae, calibrated with Cepheid variables in nearby galaxies that hosted them. Several developments not contemplated at the start of the program in

Determination of the Hubble constant, the intrinsic scatter of luminosities of Type Ia SNe, and evidence for non-standard dust in other galaxies

A sample of 109 type Ia supernovae (SNe Ia) with recession velocity . 30,000 km s, is compiled from published SNe Ia light curves to explore the expansion rate of the local Universe. Based on the color parameter ∆C12 and the decline rate ∆m15, we found that the average absorption to reddening ratio for SN Ia host galaxies to be RUBV I = 4.37±0.25, 3.33±0.11, 2.30±0.11, 1.18±0.11, which are syst...

SALT: a Spectral Adaptive Light curve Template for Type Ia Supernovae

We present a new method to parameterize Type Ia Supernovae (SN Ia) multi-color light curves. The method was developed in order to analyze the large number of SN Ia multi-color light curves measured in current high-redshift projects. The technique is based on empirically modeling SN Ia luminosity variations as a function of phase, wavelength, a shape parameter, and a color parameter. The model i...

The Hubble Constant from Type Ia Supernova Calibrated with the Linear and Non-Linear Cepheid Period-Luminosity Relations

It is well-known that the peak brightness of the Type Ia supernovae calibrated with Cepheid distances can be used to determine the Hubble constant. The Cepheid distances to host galaxies of the calibrating supernovae are usually obtained using the period-luminosity (PL) relation derived from Large Magellanic Cloud (LMC) Cepheids. However recent empirical studies provide evidence that the LMC PL...
